I can remember growing up and going to the local hardware store to look at lawnmowers with my dad. The store was so clean you could see your reflection on the floor. The lawn mowers were showcased without so much as a particle of dust on them. The staff would welcome you at the front door and answer your questions with a smile.
After you made your purchase the store clerk would shake your hand and thank you for your business as his staff assisted you with loading your car to make sure you made it safely home. Then you would receive a phone call a couple of days later thanking you for giving them the opportunity to serve you and for your vote of trust. I never forgot the way it made me feel.
What Happened to Customer Service?
In today’s market, things have surely changed. As an adult I visited a large big box store thinking, “Wow, this is going to be fun!” I walked over to the lawn mower section and began to look. I knew what type of mower I needed, but I had a couple of questions.
While standing by these cool looking mowers I realized that none of the staff had stopped to ask if I needed help. When I looked at the store employees, they would look away from me and continue down the aisle. Finally I realized that they were not going to make an effort to assist me.
So the next employee I saw, I began to follow him down the aisle. Once I got his attention he stated that he couldn’t help me because it wasn’t his department. He called someone on his radio to meet me at the lawn mowers. I waited for quite a while and finally an employee walked up and asked me what I needed. I began to ask the two questions I had concerning the lawn mower. I wanted to know what type of deck it had and what the warranty was.
The young man was unable to answer any of my questions. He said he was not very familiar with the equipment. I thanked him and left.
The New Normal
The worst part is that it’s not just this one store. I also visited smaller stores hoping for a different result but when I would approach an employee with a question, they would act as if I were a burden and they didn’t have time to talk to me. No one wants to feel like they are a burden to a sales clerk while they attempt to purchase a product. So many stores, both large and small, are now staffed with part time employees with very little training. It seems that in today’s market little or no customer service is the norm.
As I grew older and had children of my own, I would sometimes think back to my childhood and feel sad that my kids never had the same experience I had with my dad.
It’s Time to Raise the Bar
After a particularly bad customer service experience, I was telling my kids about the “good old days” and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Why does it have to be business as usual? Why can’t there be a company that gets back to the most important thing a business can offer – customer service? And right then and there, Engine Masters Outdoor Power Equipment was born. A power equipment store with the fundamental idea of treating each customer like they’re the only customer – the way it should be.
Before creating Engine Masters Outdoor Power Equipment and MyEngineMasters.com, I had the privilege of working with home owners on landscape design and installations as well as turf maintenance and integrated pest management for over a decade. I love what I do and this experience allows me to understand the importance of helping you choose the right equipment for your individual needs. I also understand how essential it is to have the parts you need so we can get you back up and running fast.
And So It Begins
Engine Masters Outdoor Power Equipment first began with our retail store offering a large selection of equipment from lawn mowers to generators. With over a 1,000,000 parts to choose from, a knowledgeable staff with over 30 years of experience, and a team of certified technicians ready to service and repair all types of equipment, our reputation spread quickly.
People started coming in from out of state to buy from us because of our old fashioned customer service. It was our customers who created MyEngineMasters.com. It has allowed us to take the simple concept of treating people right and offer it to everyone. MyEngineMasters.com has proven to be a very different type of power equipment experience, and is growing exponentially every year. So we’d like to offer a sincere “Thank You” to our growing number of loyal customers for allowing us to continue to serve you.
